Chris Smart is MetLife’s global chief learning officer leading its L&D organization globally as well as HR portfolio management and is a member of the HR leadership team. He has responsibility for leadership, mandatory, associate and sales learning as well as technology and operations. He is also responsible for preparing MetLife’s workforce for the future of work and in the last few years has led the implementation of MyPath, the company’s new talent marketplace.
Chris joined MetLife in 2011 in the UK business, where he was responsible for sales development within the wealth management business. In 2012 he moved to a global role leading sales learning and then to a role in 2015 leading all learning technology, operations, and infrastructure. In 2016 he took over as the head of L&D at MetLife.
Chris has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry working in sales, L&D and leadership roles.
Prior to MetLife he formed a sales L&D consultancy working with the leading UK financial services companies. This involved responsibility for new business acquisition, staffing, operations, client management and ultimately P&L accountability.
In addition, Chris set up a financial advisory company providing advice to companies and individuals alike. Again, as the business owner he was responsible for all aspects of this business from client acquisition to regulatory compliance.
Prior to this, Chris spent 10 years in sales, sales management and sales leadership roles at Friends Provident.
Chris lives in the UK and is married with three daughters. He is a keen Liverpool FC supporter and enjoys walking.
